The 2026 CarsGuide Car of the Year awards have announced the winner of the Best Small Car Starting Under $50K category, with the Kia EV3 taking the top spot. The MG S5 EV and Nissan Qashqai were named as runners-up.
The category featured strong competition, with the two runner-up models the result of some debate among judges. However, the winner was unanimous.
The MG S5 EV impressed judges with its significant jump in quality, ergonomics, and driving ability, making it a strong contender in the category. According to Tom White, Deputy News Editor, “The MG S5 EV gives everything such a run on the value front. It changed my mind about MG‘s EVs in that segment.”
James Cleary, Deputy Editor, summed up the S5 EV‘s strengths, saying “Looks, space, reasonable range, and its warranty” make it a compelling option. They noted these features make it a great choice for buyers.
The Nissan Qashqai was also praised by judges for its broad appeal and versatility. Tom White noted that the Qashqai “has some of the widest appeal and most versatility” in its class. It offers a range of options for buyers.
The Qashqai‘s e-Power hybrid variants were also commended for their driving feel, with Laura Berry saying “that e-Power system is amazing.” This system is a key feature of the Qashqai.
In addition, the Qashqai offers a 10-year warranty, making it an attractive option for buyers looking for a reliable vehicle.
The Kia EV3 was named the winner of the category, with judges praising its combination of clever packaging, fun driving experience, and excellent ride and handling. Tim Nicholson, Managing Editor, said “There is not much the Kia EV3 gets wrong. It has an edgy, modern design and a visually appealing and surprisingly spacious interior.”
Byron Mathioudakis, Contributing Journalist, voted for the EV3 due to its “It Factor”, saying “The design, its proportions, just the level of detail that thing has is outstanding.” The EV3 has a unique design that sets it apart from other vehicles.
While the EV3 is one of the more expensive entrants in the category, judges agreed that its value proposition makes it a compelling option. Dom Tripolone, News Editor, noted that the EV3 “feels like I’m buying a car a size above on the inside,” making it a great choice for buyers looking for a premium feel without the high cost.
The Kia EV3 is available in various trims, with the top-spec GT-Line starting at $63,950. However, the entry-grade Standard Range Air variant offers the best value, starting at $47,600 before on-roads, making it an affordable option for those looking for a car under $85K.
