Ferrari’s first electric car is here, and it’s even more controversial than expected. Before the full reveal, the Luce got people talking with its interior penned by Jony Ive and Marc Newson – and now we know that radical design continues with the exterior. Unveiled in Rome in the presence of motoring media and customers, the Luce has dominated headlines – for better or worse – ever since. But those divisive looks aside, just how impressive is Maranello’s first stab at an EV? What are its key rivals, and how does it stack up against them on paper?

Who is the Luce racing against?

We’ve gathered together the key facts and figures from the Ferrari EV’s main competitors to find out exactly what sort of car it’s going to be – and which cars it’ll need to tempt buyers away from. The comparison pits the Luce against the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the Lucid Air Sapphire, and the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT was added to the range in 2024 as the most powerful Porsche ever. It delivers up to 1019bhp. The Lucid Air Sapphire isn’t sold in the UK, but it boasts incredibly impressive stats – it’s insanely powerful and delivers stunning acceleration, all while achieving a hugely attractive driving range. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is the newest rival, featuring all-wheel drive and three motors to develop over 1100bhp, with a claimed ability to complete a 10-80% charge in just 11 minutes.

Size and Specifications

Before we get to the performance, it is worth looking at the dimensions. A car’s profile gives an indication of its purpose. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is the widest option at 2195mm including mirrors and weighs 2420kg. The Lucid Air Sapphire sits at 1959mm wide, making it the slimmest option. The Ferrari Luce is the longest and tallest on this list, meaning passengers should have more leg and head room, but its width is on a par with most other cars mentioned.

Wheelbase is another key factor. A car with a longer wheelbase, such as the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, should manage its centre of gravity very well. The Taycan Turbo GT should be more agile with its 2900mm wheelbase. The Ferrari’s wheelbase sits comfortably in the middle, which means it should provide a lovely balance of handling and stability.

Maximum power in this class is capacious and monstrous. Every car has over 100kWh battery capacity, with the Luce and Air Sapphire peeling away from the other pair. However, the power spread is interesting. The Ferrari and Porsche settle with under 1100bhp, while the Mercedes has 1153bhp, and the Lucid Air Sapphire tops the 1200 mark. The larger battery size combined with the lower weight of the Luce should be advantageous for range, but those power figures appear troubling for Maranello’s EV.

Range and Charging Speeds

While these figures give a good indication of each car’s performance, they don’t paint the entire picture. Each manufacturer has been busy developing new technology to deliver that power in an exceptional driving experience. The claimed range figures are a mixed bag. The Lucid Air Sapphire offers 370 to 432 miles, while the Luce manages 336 to 347 miles. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe hasn’t published a specific combined range figure yet.

Here is where things get a little spicy, because the electric power of all four cars can deliver blistering acceleration times. Zero to 62mph is achieved in less than three seconds for all these vehicles. The Lucid Air Sapphire stands out with a sub-two-second time, though it claims a 0-60mph time instead. The Ferrari has the slowest claimed acceleration and comes in second for top speed, but lacks the same sort of range as the others.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe easily trumps the rest with an impressive 600kW maximum charging power, but good luck finding an EV charger to match. The AMG takes the top step again with an 11-minute charging time to go from 10 to 80 percent, with the Taycan Turbo GT trailing at a respectable 18 minutes. Ferrari and Lucid don’t quote conventional 10-80% charge times – instead, they disclose the amount of time it takes to reach 70kWh and 200 miles, respectively.

While the Luce can charge at up to 22kW using AC power, Ferrari doesn’t quote any specific AC charging times, which is a bit of a differentiator compared to the Porsche’s 11-hour AC charging time (10-80%) at 11kW, despite the option for a 22kW AC charger.

The Price of Performance

Pricing for the high-performance options is steep. The Ferrari Luce is priced at €500,000 (around £440,000), while the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT starts from £189,200. The Lucid Air Sapphire costs $249,000 (around £185,000), making it the best value proposition of the bunch, though it isn’t available in the UK.

The Ferrari Luce’s stats aren’t new – at least not when compared to the Porsche, Taycan and Lucid – but the Ferrari is intended to be more than raw power. It incorporates new features such as torque shift engagement, which increases power and decreases regeneration through five modes. This system differs from Hyundai’s set-up, which simulates a redline to increase driver engagement. Add to this the fact that the Luce is Ferrari’s first five-seater, and it’s unlike any Ferrari ever.

It is a bit of a bold move for a marque traditionally defined by two seats and agility. While the Lucid Air Sapphire dominates on paper with battery size and top speed, the Ferrari is betting that its unique driving trends and seating capacity will secure its place in the garage. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe offers the fastest charging and highest power output, but the Luce aims to offer a different kind of experience: one that balances usable space with the brand’s heritage, even if the specs lag behind the American and German engineers.
