Xiaomi unveils hybrid SUV to rival Zeekr

The first model from Xiaomi’s new SUV sub-brand, SkyNomad, appeared in Chinese regulatory filings. The vehicle, named N90, will compete directly with Zeekr’s upcoming 8X hybrid SUV.

Size and seating match premium Chinese rivals

The N90 measures 4,960 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,765 mm tall, placing it in the large-SUV segment. A seven-seat layout will rival the GWM Tank 500 and BYD Sealion 8, while a five-seat version may challenge the Zeekr 8X when it launches in Australia next year.

The N90 differs from Xiaomi’s previous all-electric SU7 GT and YU7 SUV by using a plug-in hybrid system. It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (112 kW) with either a single electric motor (210 kW) or a dual-motor setup (210 kW rear, 100 kW front).

Battery options and efficiency figures

Two battery packs are available: a 52 kWh unit offering a CLTC-rated range of 270 km, or a 76 kWh pack extending that to 380 km. Fuel consumption on gasoline alone, measured at reserve charge, ranges from 5.7 to 6.1 L/100 km.

Official images show a design shift from the sleek lines of the SU7 and YU7. The N90 adopts a more conventional luxury-SUV shape, featuring a prominent DRL strip cutting through the front light clusters. Its side profile and rear box-shaped taillights follow current trends in Chinese premium SUVs.

The filings list 20-inch two-tone alloys and a 19-inch design with plastic aero covers as wheel options.

Lifestyle focus with camping edition

The N90 targets a lifestyle audience, unlike the sportier Zeekr 8X or off-road-focused GWM models. A camping edition, approved in the filings, includes a pop-up roof tent. Interior images reveal a leather cabin with a 2+2+3 seating arrangement for three-row models. Reversible front seats and a convertible center console table offer flexibility for travel or work.

The camping version’s boot contains a built-in projector, paired with a retractable screen that unfolds above the front seats. A large central touchscreen and digital dashboard dominate the front, while middle-row passengers have their own touch control panel on the center console.

Xiaomi’s automotive division has experienced strong demand in China. The SU7 and YU7 created waiting lists exceeding production capacity. Exports remain a secondary focus, though the company has mentioned global ambitions. It is increasing production through a partnership with BAIC, which may eventually allow more units for overseas markets.

Pre-orders for the N90 are already open on Xiaomi’s website. Its official launch in China is expected shortly. Whether it will expand to other markets, including Australia where the Zeekr 8X is headed, remains uncertain.

For now, SkyNomad is concentrating on its home market to manage initial interest. Those looking to sell a vehicle quickly may find opportunities as demand for new models grows.
