The Skyline GT-R dominated Japanese touring car racing in its era.

Mattel’s Brick Shop is now offering a Lego-style building set of the original Skyline GT-R, a model that dominated Japanese touring car racing in its era. The kit includes customizable racing parts, metal components, and a complementary Hot Wheels replica.

The Skyline GT-R, also known as the “hakosuka,” is a boxy hero car that earned its nickname from the Japanese pronunciation of “box” and “Skyline.” It’s a fitting subject for a brick building set, given its boxy shape.

The Model Details

The model is made up of 833 pieces and can be customized for road or race spec. It comes with a matching Hot Wheels die-cast and features functioning doors, an opening hood, and working steering. The tires are actual Yokohamas under license.

The set also includes interchangeable wheels, a racing splitter, and headlight covers, allowing enthusiasts to recreate the iconic look of a 1970s Skyline GT-R on black Watanabe racing wheels.

Partnership and Availability

This is the first Nissan to be built in partnership with Mattel Brick Shop, which may indicate more models in the pipeline. The set will be available starting in January 2027 for $59.99.

The original Skyline GT-R was created by Nissan engineers who had previously worked for Prince, a higher-end manufacturer. They took the engine from one of their larger sedans and installed it in the nose of a mid-sizer, creating the inline-six-powered Skyline 2000GT.

Nissan engineers developed the C10 generation of Skyline further, and in 1969, they launched the 2000 GT-R, which went on to achieve 50 racing victories by 1972. The GT-R’s 2.0-liter inline-six was also installed in a rare version of the contemporary 240Z called the Z432.

Heritage and Significance

The Skyline GT-R’s heritage is marked by an internal rivalry between Nissan’s engineers and those who had originally worked for Prince. The team formerly working for Prince kept the best racing parts for themselves, which contributed to the GT-R’s success in Japanese touring car racing.

The release of this brick building set is a significant development for JDM enthusiasts, who can now recreate the iconic Skyline GT-R in a new and unique way. With its attention to detail and customizable features, the set is sure to please fans of the original car.
