Honda revealed the official name of its upcoming powertrain system: Honda Hybrid. The company announced that the new system will launch in 2027 and will power approximately 15 models by 2030. The powertrain will be built on a new platform designed to reduce weight while increasing structural rigidity.

The new hybrid architecture supports all-wheel drive. Honda officials stated that the platform uses a new method for managing body rigidity. This approach allows the vehicle body to flex slightly during cornering to improve roadholding. The company states this was achieved through the “adoption of a new approach to body rigidity management which brings about vehicle behavior as if the body is flexing during cornering and improving roadholding performance.” This sounds similar to claims that Honda made about its 0-series EV platform back in 2024, before the company scrapped its planned EVs in early 2026 at a cost of $15.8 billion. The automaker also downsized the drive unit and expanded the high-efficiency operating range of the engine to boost fuel economy.

Technical Specs and Capabilities

Current Honda hybrids, including the Civic, Accord, and CR-V, utilize a two-motor setup paired with a four-cylinder engine. The next-generation system is expected to follow this pattern. However, Honda has discussed adding a third electric motor to the rear axle for larger vehicles. This configuration would provide all-wheel drive and could utilize a V-6 engine. Back in 2025, we drove a next-generation Civic Hybrid prototype featuring a new 2.0-liter engine, a pair of electric motors, and a new battery.

Market Expansion

The new system will debut in North America. Honda expects the technology to appear in the next-generation versions of the Civic, Accord, and CR-V within the next year. The lineup will also include Acura models. The luxury brand plans to release a new RDX Hybrid and a hybrid version of the MDX.
