DAF Trucks has broadened its lineup of electric vehicles, launching fresh models and smart connectivity tools aimed at minimizing operational interruptions and boosting fleet performance. These innovations were showcased at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, where the company debuted electrified versions of its XG and XG+ series, further expanding its zero-emission lineup into long-distance transportation.
The newly released electric trucks utilize the same propulsion system and lithium iron phosphate battery technology found in the XD and XF Electric models. DAF states these vehicles can travel over 340 miles per charge, with actual range varying based on setup and operating conditions.
Each battery system comes with an eight-year warranty, and manufacturers confirm daily full charges to 100% capacity won’t degrade long-term performance. Among the new electric configurations are 6×2 tractors featuring either a steered pusher or trailing axle for demanding distribution tasks, as well as 6×2 rigid models suited for tipper and demountable body applications.
Electric Truck Range Expansion
Additionally, DAF has developed 6×4 and 8×4 electric rigid trucks equipped with driven tandem axles, specifically designed for construction operations. A redesigned battery arrangement relocates packs from under the cab to positions further back, reducing front axle load by approximately 700kg—potentially increasing payload capacity by up to 2.5 tonnes.
The company reports certain electric models can transport up to 500kg more than comparable diesel trucks when factoring in extra weight allowances for zero-emission vehicles. This advantage stems from the lighter electric powertrain and battery components.
Connected Services and Uptime Technology
DAF is rolling out a suite of digital fleet management tools under the TruckIQ initiative, leveraging the PACCAR Connect platform. Over-the-air software updates will enable drivers to install critical system upgrades without requiring workshop visits. A PreDiagnostics feature will provide dealers with advance notice of required maintenance, ensuring technicians and spare parts are ready upon arrival.
Smart Service Alerts will analyze vehicle data to detect emerging issues before they cause unexpected downtime. Additional onboard systems will track real-time and cumulative weight measurements, as well as fuel efficiency metrics. A new drowsiness and distraction detection system will alert drivers if their gaze strays from the road for more than six seconds.
According to Jim Walenczak, president of DAF Trucks, the new vehicles and digital tools are engineered to offer operators specialized configurations for diverse transport needs while enhancing reliability and efficiency. The expanded electric lineup and connected services are expected to help fleet managers cut downtime and optimize daily operations.
Beyond electric offerings, DAF has also enhanced its diesel-powered XD, XF, XG, and XG+ ranges with new axle configurations. Among the additions is a five-axle 10×4 rigid designed for heavy construction, capable of reaching a technical gross vehicle weight of up to 54 tonnes. The company has also introduced car transporter chassis in 4×2 and 6×2 formats, featuring a lowered chassis height of 83cm to maximize cargo space within the four-meter legal height limit.
